Vor über einem Jahr erschien der Powers Irish Rye in ausgewählten Märkten. Ab sofort ist der Irish Whiskey, der als erster auf Basis von 100% Irish Rye gilt, in Deutschland erhältlich. Den Roggen bezieht man vollständig von der Cooney Furlong Farm im County Wexford. Für die Herstellung zeichnet derweil in gewohnter Manier die Midleton Distillery im irischen County Cork verantwortlich. Soweit bekannt, nimmt die Brennerei auf ihren Kupferbrennblasen eine dreifache Destillation des ungemälzten Roggens vor. Daraufhin darf der Rye in einer Kombination aus Virgin-American-Oak- und First-Fill- sowie Refill-Bourbon-Casks reifen. Eine Altersangabe existiert nicht. Abgefüllt wird mit einem Alkoholvolumen von 43,2 Prozent und ohne Kältefiltration. Offen bleibt, ob auch auf Farbstoff verzichtet wird.
Die Tasting-Notes nennen Geruch nach gebrannter Orange, Maraschino-Kirschen und Toffee-Banane mit kräftigen, wärmenden Noten frisch gebackenem Roggenbrot, Buttercroissant und ausgebrannter Eiche. Eine kräftige Würze von Nelke, weißem Pfeffer und Ingwer treffe auf süße Vanille und erdiges Zuckerrohr. Geschmacklich kandierter Ingwer mit Orangenschale, Nelkenwürze und Pfefferminz. Bratapfel mit braunem Zucker, süßem Getreide und rotem Süßholz, während Vanille und ausgebrannte Eiche in Balance mit Roggen-typischen Gewürzen auftreten. Angenehm lang mit etwas Chiliöl in Begleitung Honig-überzogener Früchte und kräftigen Getreides.
Powers Distiller Eric Ryan erzählt: „We attribute the success of this whiskey firstly to the extended team at Midleton Distillery, yet also to the generations of Powers distillers who considered rye grain to be a unique component of their craft. From our commitment to farming a difficult crop, to reduced brewhouse throughput, to longer fermentation times, and considering the exceptional cask profile; if it was only about efficiency, we would never have used rye! But it proved a worthy endeavour. In an interview conducted by Royal Commission on whiskey back in 1908, the Powers ethos was best described by James Talbot Power, ‚At Powers, we are producers of flavours, not of spirits‘, and we are proud to continue this Powers legacy in 2023.“
Der Powers Irish Rye wird ab sofort im gut sortierten Fachhandel angeboten. Der empfohlene Preis beträgt 40 Euro je 0,7-l-Flasche.
